Fahrenheit 9/11 Gets Standing "O" in Greensboro...And according to a poster on Free Republic, Greensboro is a "Liberal Mecca".
Michael Moore is reported on Drudge as saying that.....
MOORE: 'We sold out in Fayetteville, home of Fort Bragg, We sold out in Army-base towns. We set house records in some of these places. We set single-day records in a number of theaters. We got standing ovations in Greensboro, N.C... The biggest news to me this morning is this is a red-state movie. Republican states are embracing the movie, and it's sold out in Republican strongholds all over the country...
HARVEY WEINSTEIN: 'It's beyond anybody's expectations. I'd have to say the sky's the limit on this movie. Who knows what territory we're in'...
The Right Wing Nuts are going crazy over this. Just looking at Free Republic and some guy who apparently lives in Greensboro, was commenting on the statement by Moore concerning the Standing "O" in Greensboro.

This is hardly news. Anyone who knows anything about Greensboro knows it is a liberal mecca in a sea of conservatism. Home of the civil rights sit-ins and where Jesse Jackson went to school. Home of UNC-Greensboro or UNC-Gay as it is called around here. Home to some of the most liberal minded people in this part of the country.
I'll bet 'ol Mikey is pretty stoked about it selling out in Chapel Hill, too!
Now, IF he sold out in Fayetteville, that MIGHT be a story, but I seriously doubt military families went to see it. If anything, I would bet that liberals from Raleigh and Wilmington made the trek to Fayetteville and "sold out" the theaters there.

Greensboro is a "Liberal Mecca"? UNC-G is called UNC-Gay? I've lived around here nearly all my life and I have never heard of either one. My oldest daughter goes to UNC-G, I'll have to ask her if she has ever heard this nickname for her school. I wish Greensboro was a liberal mecca.

Glad I found you and gled you are posting again.
I've never heard of Greensboro being expecially liberal either - the UNC-Gay thinks is new too.
Come see me sometime

While I've seen all those references to UNCG before (about 30 years now) the student population at UNCG is about ten thousand in a county of almost one million Okay, maybe more like 850,000The fact is: This area IS the area that gives NC. the reputation of being a conservative state. You can pick any 5 or 6 of the so-called conservative counties in the east of the state and not match the population of any one of the Piedmont counties.
You see, what the pundits are missing is the fact that life-long Republicians (registered 1974) like me, who voted for Reagan, George I, and George II, are waking up to the fact that the NEO-Cons are destroying the grand old party and no longer represent anyone but the rich and richer.
That's why I intend to cast my ballot for Yellow Dog and hope to see Moore's movie next week.
I've heard the UNC-Gay thing many times. Regarding the liberal bit, ummm, if you ARE a liberal, it sure doesn't feel as if there are lots of liberals here.
I have lived in Greensboro all of my life, and I have a parent who has been on faculty at UNC-Greensboro for over a decade. I have never head the UNC-Gay reference. Even if some use the term, it is not used enough to represent it as a common phrase in this city.
Calling Greensboro a liberal mecca is moronic. This city has strong supporters both conservative and liberal with an overall slight tilt toward the right. Let's not forget that Greensboro said it would be the first to implement the Brown vs the Board decision and ended up being the last to do so. Let's also recall that the museum being built at the site of the Sit-Ins has struggled mightily to gain public support.
This is just another attempt to brand anything that a conservative does not like as liberal.
I agree with you. Just because we had the lunch counter sit-ins and Jesse Jackson went to school here has nothing to do with it. If you followed that logic, Montgomery Alabama, Birmingham, Mississippi, should all be bastions of Liberalism. And they're nothing of the sort.
i went to unc-g and heard it called unc-gay constantly.
